Legion family membership requirtements
listed below are the requirements for membership into the American Legion family.  For more information, you can return to our HOME page and either contact an officer that is listed or fill out the information request form found at the bottom of that page.

AMERICAN LEGION MEMBERSHIP
 

If you have served federal active duty in the armed forces during any of these war eras, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving — you can join the The American Legion!

*August 2, 1990 to cessation of hostilities as determined by the US Government (Operation Desert Shield/Storm)
December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990 (Operation Just Cause - Panama)
August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon/Grenada)
February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 (Korean War)
December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (World War II)
April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (World War I)
*Because eligibility dates remain open, all members of the U.S. Armed Forces are eligible to join The American Legion at this time, until the date of the end of hostilities as determined by the government of the United States.
U.S. Merchant Marine eligible only from Dec. 7, 1941 to Aug. 16, 1945.

 

S.A.L. MEMBERSHIP
 
Not everyone is eligible to become a member of the Sons of The American Legion. There are specific membership requirements. 

 To be eligible, you must be a male descendant (includes stepsons and adopted sons) of a member of The American Legion. 

You would also be eligible to join the Sons of The American Legion if you are the male descendant (stepsons and adopted sons included) of a veteran who died in service during World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, or the Persian Gulf War.

You would also be eligible to join the Sons of The American Legion if you are the male descendant (stepsons and adopted sons included) of a veteran who died subsequent to his or her honorable discharge from service in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, or the Persian Gulf War.

LADIES AUXILIARY MEMBERSHIP

Eligibility
 
 
  • A woman who is eligible for membership in The American Legion is also eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary.
  • The mother, wife, daughter, sister, grand-daughter, great-grand-daughter, or grandmother of members of The American Legion, and deceased veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces during the listed war eras.
  • Step relatives are also eligible.
